Every deal you will ever work - a $30/month subscription or a $300,000 enterprise contract - moves through the same six stages: target, research, outreach, conversation, close, follow-through. People who cannot name the stages experience sales as random luck; people who can name them can diagnose exactly where a deal died and fix that one stage instead of vaguely 'trying harder.' This is the same reason doctors learn anatomy before treatment: you cannot fix what you cannot locate. It also kills the biggest beginner myth - that selling is mostly the persuasive conversation at the end. In reality the conversation is maybe 20% of the work; deals are mostly won or lost in targeting and research, before a single word is sent. This module walks the whole loop once, in miniature, so nothing later in the course ever feels like an isolated trick.
Here is the loop run on a purchase you have probably watched happen. A 40-person startup buys Notion. Target: Notion's marketing decided that fast-growing startups drowning in Google Docs are ideal buyers. Research: their content and ads speak directly to that pain ('your docs, wiki, and projects in one place'). Outreach: the founder saw Notion mentioned three times - a tweet, a friend's recommendation, a comparison article; outreach is not always a cold email, it is whatever creates the first real touch. Conversation: the ops lead ran a two-week trial with one team and asked Notion's sales team about pricing for 40 seats. Close: they signed an annual plan at roughly $10 per user per month - about $4,800 a year. Follow-through: Notion's onboarding emails and templates got the other teams using it, which is why the account renews and grows next year instead of churning.
Now run the loop backwards as a diagnostic. No renewals? Follow-through is broken. Lots of conversations but no closes? Wrong people in the conversations or no clear ask - a targeting or conversation problem. Sending 50 emails and getting zero replies? Almost never a 'writing' problem - it is usually targeting (wrong people) or research (nothing specific to say). Beginners instinctively blame the email copy; the loop tells you to look two stages earlier first. In this module you will execute every stage once: pick a product (task 3), a target (task 4), research (task 5), outreach (tasks 6-7), follow up (task 8), and read the outcome (task 9).
