How Featured Snippets Are Selected

Why this matters

Featured snippets capture position zero — above all organic results — and can double click-through rate for informational queries, but Google selects them algorithmically based on how directly and clearly the content answers the query. Understanding the selection criteria lets you deliberately format existing content to win snippets rather than hoping for them.

Try it yourself

1. Search for a question your content answers and check whether a featured snippet already exists — if yes, compare its formatting (paragraph, list, or table) to your page's current format for that answer.
2. Reformat one answer block on your page to match the format of the featured snippet that ranks above you: if theirs is a numbered list, restructure your answer as a numbered list with the same approximate word count.
3. Check Google Search Console's Performance report filtered to queries where you rank 1–5 — these are your featured snippet candidates; identify the three queries with the highest impression count where you do not hold the snippet.
