Why this matters

Pitching the wrong person at a publication wastes your time and theirs — a beat reporter covering enterprise software will not forward your consumer app pitch to a colleague, they will delete it. Understanding how beats, section editors, and freelancers divide a newsroom tells you exactly who to contact and with what framing.

Try it yourself

1. Pick one publication relevant to your product, go to its masthead or staff page, and identify the beat reporters versus the section editors — note which beats map closest to your story.
2. Find a byline from that publication for a story in your category and look up whether the author is a staff reporter, a contributing editor, or a freelancer — each requires a different outreach approach.
3. Search that publication's archives for stories about companies similar to yours and record the three authors who appear most frequently — these are your primary targets.
