Failed vs. Successful Positioning: Case Studies

Why this matters

Positioning failures are usually not launch mistakes — they are slow accumulations of hedged bets, where companies try to be something for everyone and end up differentiated to no one. Studying both failure and success patterns lets you recognize the symptoms before the damage compounds.

Try it yourself

1. Find a company whose positioning failed (look for 'repositioning' press releases or 'pivot' announcements) and reconstruct what their original positioning was and why it did not hold.
2. Find a company whose positioning succeeded in a crowded market and identify the one specific claim they made that competitors could not or did not make at the time.
3. Apply both patterns to your product: write one sentence describing the failure mode your current positioning is most at risk of, and one sentence describing the success pattern you are closest to.
